Over time ive put together a small “chicken wish list” for some of the ornamental breeds I’ve got my eyes on. Some of them are not exactly considered ornamental, but in my eyes, are remarkable. Even the mixes! I make “breed lists” every year, for the annual batch of chicks. It’s always for a different reason, and my past lists have always been for breeds that could boost our flock, Calm Temperament, Good egg production, best egg colors, and some others. This year, I added to my flock for egg production, but I did not want heavy layers. Of course because of that, the breeds I chose were poor layers, and now my 3 and 2 year olds are slowing down. Next spring I’m adding to the flock again (If the Pandemic and post office situation allows) but I want Ornamental birds. More unreliable layers is much better than less reliable ones, it’s an excuse for more birds 😂

So here are my top choices, what should I add? (the numbers beside the names are ranking them how much I like them)

BLRWs are awesome. I have one and she's an excellent layer. And she raised a batch of chicks this past spring. She's the sweetest bird ever. A lot of the birds on your WL are on mine too, lol.

They are! When adding to the flock this summer, I was late to the game thanks to COVID. My favorite hatchery (Cackle) was out of stock of every breed to pretty much exist (of course!) so I switched gears and ordered from MTHealthy. They always have nice breeds in stock that time of year, so I was lucky to get a SLW. Although i had wanted a BLRW, and they were in stock, they were only sold as straight run from that hatchery, and because of my oldest hen’s condition, I didn’t want to risk a cockerel. This year I’m getting on Cackle as early as January or February to place my order for the spring :D They say the early bird gets the worm, but really, the early bird gets the bird!

Have to second that! My BLRW is the sweetest of my chickens. Not laying yet though. Love the polish too and their quirky personalities.🥰

I keep Barbu D'uccles, and they are incredibly sweet! As soon as I got them as chicks they would come and sit on my lap for cuddles and chat quietly with me. Not reliable layers in the slightest!

I had great luck getting the breeds I wanted from MurrayMcmurray. I got mine from them, though she is more gray base then blue. Meyer has them as well!😊

Too bad you didn't get one! Hopefully you can get some soon. They're awesome. I got mine from Meyer sexed. They were super easy to work with. Here are some pics of my girly. She's great.

Oh I forgot to add that at the time I was only able to order from a hatchery with a reasonable minimum. Many hatcheries I found had a minimum of 15 or 10, and at the time, I was not sure about diving into that many at once. It was May while 2020 was all coming down on us. I wasn’t about to dive into that many birds if I couldn’t even find toilet paper for myself!
