CHICKEN WITH CLOGGED NOSE + EYE MOVING (please help)

This is my poor girl Artemis. I’ve had her for 5 years and just around 6 months ago I noticed a very small build up of stuff in her nostril.

Then it wasn’t terribly noticeable and I convinced myself it was just the usual messy face chicken she usually is.

When it got more noticeable I took to the right side of her face and managed to get the clog out, but I never could get the other side out.

It keeps getting bigger and bigger and I can’t get it out. Just today I was horrified to discover her eye and head are swelling out of place.

This girl has been my therapy bird who has gotten me through the pandemic and it would kill me to see her die.

What do I do? Can I use antibiotics? Should I try to pry it out? Do I take her to the vet?

Please help, I’d really appreciate it more than you know.

It looks like a buildup of feed and mucus in the nostril. I have never seen where it caused swelling of the head before. Can you see any yellow material or cankers inside the beak or in the roof of the beak where the slit is? To clean out gunk like that, you can drip a couple of drops of hydrogen peroxide into the nostril letting it sit a minute or two. Then try to gently dig it out with a wooden toothpick.

I’ve been slowly picking away at it.
I tried to get her mouth open but these were all of the pictures I could get. Nothing looks out of the ordinary.

Her eye development is really new. There hasn’t been any gunk or mucous coming out of the eye. It’s just kinda out of place and her head is slightly swollen around her sinuses.

I rarely see her sneeze or wheeze unless I’m messing with her nose. She can breath but you can tell she’s congested and has to breathe through her mouth.

I’ve managed to pick away quite a bit of the gunk, but while doing so she flicked her head right into my toothpick and her nostril is bleeding somewhere in there. I’ve been using warm salt water and hydrogen peroxide to soften it.

I really appreciate your help.

I’ve been picking for a while now and I can tell she’s totally over it. I gave her a treat and I’m debating letting her rest since it’s gotten dark out.

I worry that if I stop now then it’ll get much worse overnight and increase any chances of her passing away from this. I just hope it’s not fatal.

I think I’m gonna let her sleep and get back at it tomorrow. Poor girl. She’s still a good sport and is acting her normal self.

Sorry to hear about your girl! I would suggest to stop picking at the scab at the moment, it looks like it's causing some bleeding. Do you have Tylan on hand? It might be an upper respiratory infection building up in the sinus cavity- which would put pressure on the eye and could cause some swelling. Is a vet an option? If not, see if you can begin her on Tylan and give it a week or so to see if there's any results or improvement.

You can clean the scab on her nose using a warm washcloth to gently clean away the junk. As that breaks down, a dulled tip toothpick or ear cleaner can be used to very gently begin clearing the inner nostril- though I suggest having a second pair of hands to help keep her still. If you see any blood, stop, clean her up and leave it be. If you have any betadine or chlorhexidine, you could dilute it and dab some on with a q-tip just to help keep any further bacteria out.

Keep us updated on how she's doing!

Thank you! I cleaned it off and sanitized it the best I could before sending her to bed.

I don’t have Tylan on hand.I do have VetRX and Banixx on hand though.

The vet isn’t much of an option. I’m still a minor and have little in my savings account. As of now I want to see if I can help it. But, if things get worse then I’ll gladly go into debt for her.
Before school tomorrow I’ll take a look at it and make sure it’s not worse. And I’ll go ahead and order Tylan now.

Thank you all for your help, you have no idea. ❤️

I'd give her breaks, but work on removing the material a couple of times a day.
Apply 1 drop Peroxide as instructed, let it "soak" in, then see if you can remove a bit of material at a time.

Hopefully the swelling will go down once removed. I've not seen swelling like that with a clogged nostril. I tend to agree, if you have an antibiotic on hand, it would be good to treat for sinus infection IF the swelling doesn't resolve quickly after the nostril is cleaned out.

You can order Tylosin online.

I just ordered that Tylosin. I’ll have to wait until it’s delivered on Feb 3rd though. Hopefully it isn’t too bad by then.

I’ll keep you all updated.

Again, thank you.
