hi all, there is a picture on the back of poultry world magazine from randall burkey co. that pictures a hen wheaten color with a curled or I call shredded tail. does anyone know what breed this is or what cross would produce this tail???????

thanks for replying the hen has an orpington body confirmation with smooth feathers but the tail Looks like that of a sebastabol goose ! really gorgeous

I don't think the tail of that bird is naturally like that. The feathers appear frayed due to lack of condition and possible overmating by a rooster. The hen herself looks like a Wyandotte mix.

You could probably find a similar frayed tail in almost any non-conditioned bird.

Agreed.

This image was in their catalog, is this the hen:
Looks like 2 different hens. Back 1/2 looks like Frizzle photos, never seen one personally. I think it was a trick!

the thing that interested me is that there are sabastapol geese that have flat feathers on neck and chest area and gorgeous curled feathers on back and tail that almost trails on some birds. I wonder if that is possible with chickens?

the ad I saw was a full page not creased she was with a ton of little baby chicks in a grassy area maybe it was a breeze that ruffeled her tail
