Chicken with disheveled feathers and diarrhea

I dose all of mine by mouth based on their weight at 50mg per kilogram which is 0.5ml per 2.2 pounds of body weight. Repeat in ten days.

Liquid or paste, the amount you give is the same.

Never used Fen paste. Thanks for converting kg like an American.

.7 cc/ml (about 3/4 cc) was a standard for Safeguard on an LF I used before. What changed? There was another reputable site which recommended that dosage. I can't remember which one it was though. I'll try to find it.

FYI... Paste has 100mg of medicine per gram and 1ml of paste weighs one gram, so 1ml of paste has 100mg of medicine, just like the liquid does.

All of the literature if have says the range is 10-100mg/kg, I just happen to use 50mg/kg because that's what my vets said to use. Lots of people, like you, use a lower dose.

Thanks Kathy. Good to know. I only use liquid suspensions since they are more practical to me. For the folks who may have Bantams, that would be 1/2 cc/ml? Now what about dosing a 6 week old standard breed chick? No scales involved.

I saw on other post you can use ivermectin topically for the mice/lice. I'm getting really confused. So much contradictory information. And, what about the eggs some say they throw them away for 14 days others say they don't. Thoughts?

Ivermectin has a mystery withdrawal period. Unless the lice suck ivermectin laced blood, they live on to irritate and lay eggs. I say why use all these other products that don't work, when there are those that do, and are safe. Ivermectin was recommended for birds some years ago for worms and mites. Most people should know better by now. Ivermectin treats few worms, isn't as effective on mites and lice.

I've never used the ivermectin, I've always used the Safeguard and the external Sevin. Anytime you put something into your birds, there is a time when you don't want to use their eggs. Some drugs have a 14 day withdrawel, others a 7 days. You should always do the research on this no matter what you are using. I am repeating what I have read in posts by Dawg53, but he says that the ivermectin isn't working anymore. As I said, I've never used it so I have no first hand knowledge of this.

I'd like to add something...if you ask a question here on BYC, you are going to get into different opinions on different products and how much they work or do not. Where you live can have an effect on a drug's use to fight worms or mites. What will work here in the North, may not be effective enough for someone down South where the temps are warmer giving the little nasties a better chance to grow. I think you need to keep your particular needs and enviroment in your thoughts as you make a decision. Safeguard is one of the universal wormers and works extremely well, North or South, lol. Don't feel someone is giving you inconsistant information, they really aren't. It's just coming from their experiences and what worked the best for them. You've been given some great info here by both Casportpony and Michael Apple. Now it's up to you to decide what you want to try first.

Thanks for the perspective. I agree with what you are saying. I'm just a "mother hen" who is super worried about her pet (favorite) chicken. I really do appreciate all the advice. I was just getting overwhelmed.
