Chicken with injured comb

Awww. Poor girl. It'll take a few days for the pain and itching to recede enough to trust her. Too bad we can't explain to them why we do the things we do!
Yes, I feel like instinctually a chicken knows being held a certain way means they may be slaughtered - idk, millions of years of instinct and evolution? Felt awful - had to hold her upside down to do this as I am alone until husband gets home to check her after I’ve gone to work. Have left detailed instructions lol just in case he needs to redo anything

Well my comment goes off topic here, but I have to wonder if they instinctually know too. I essentially have PTSD from slaughtering my first rooster. He looked right in my eye when I had him upside down. I swear he knew. I have no regrets except it's easier (on me) to dispatch numerous birds at once, than just one single bird.

To me it's just the fact that a giant is grabbing you by your legs and turning you in a very vulnerable position. Think of the size difference. If some strange creature that much bigger than you, grabbed you and held you upside-down, you'd freak out too. I personally would flail and kick and scratch and bite. 😅

This rooster was freakishly calm the whole time. He even nestled into my arms when I was carrying him. It was terrible. Why couldn't he have been a mean rooster?

My hen that I had to hobble though, she is the flappiest panickiest bird in the entire flock. She's a terror to manage and to-date, she's had her neck slashed open, her comb torn mostly off, and double bumblefoot. She's also had the worst luck of any chicken in the flock!
