That sounds like it works for you, as long as you are always home. Hens don’t need a rooster at all for egg laying, but the eggs just are not fertilized, and would not hatch. They look and taste the same. But I do like to have a rooster in the flock. The hens like to snuggle with him on the roost and they look to him for leadership, to do the warning call for predator, and to keep peace. They just are not necessary and I have a zero tolerance for hurting a hen. I have had a lot of roosters and most were chicken friendly and people friendly. Good luck.
