Hello,

We have a 5 year old Rhode Island Red who has been having trouble with her vent for a few weeks...Messy with yellow crusted wet poop, and a couple weeks ago, she was prolapsed too. She also hasn't laid any eggs this season, while both of her coopmates have been for at least a month, maybe two. We got the prolapse under control and have been assuming Gleet (with SIP we can't go to vet), cleaning her vent area every day with apple cider vinegar and applying athlete's foot cream. It seemed to have it somewhat under control after 10 days, but then when we stopped it came back within two days and now she's not looking so good. Lethargic, not sure if she's eating, her comb looks like it's greying a bit at the tips. I've included pictures of her vent area (I cleaned it last night) and her comb. We separated her from the flock and put her in the basement and she hasn't moved a ton. I manged to get some eyedroppers of water in her with Ropa Poultry complete, cleaned her cloaca and added cream. She ate a couple dried soldier fly larvae, but she usually is crazy for them and only ate a few.

Her backside is pretty raw, I think one of the other chickens may have been pecking there too. we also tried checking for a bound egg, but didn't feel anything obvious. We haven't done an exam for that before, so not sure what it's supposed to feel like...

We feed them layer crumbles or pellets, depending on what we can get in this crazy situation. Right now it's been Modesto Milling pellets. For bedding, we were using straw, then shifted pine shavings and are now using aspen shavings...

We thought the other chickens might have gotten it too, but after a couple cleanings, no more crusties.

Anyway, in the absence of being able to go to a vet, any ideas of what we can do?

Thanks so much!

Thanks for your response!

Yeah, she's barely walking...will take a few steps then stop. No eating. I've been giving her water with an eyedropper that has some Ropa and probiotics in it, and she'll drink that and occasional dip her head for a few drinks. I can't tell if her crop is blocked, it's not huge looking anyway, and not sure where to feel. If anything, her breastbone seems real prominent in that area...

Hello, just checking how your girl is doing? hope she is better.

Hi, sorry you have not gotten much response to this. There is so much traffic on the site these days that requests for help can fly by like a snowflake in a blizzard. The best way I can help you is to flag some folks who are much more knowledgeable and experienced than myself and see who's available. Stand by. @Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock @Chicken Canoe

Was there an egg in the prolapse?
Doesn't really look like Vent Gleet to me.
How does her abdomen feel - any bloat or fluid between the legs below the vent?

At 5 yrs old, not laying at all this season and some of the symptoms you describe, I would take a guess that she's having reproductive problems. Cancer, peritonitis, internal laying, etc.
She may have infection, hard to know. The green tint to the poop may be from not eating.
If you don't plan on processing her then Baytril is what I would try, you would need to order it though. If you can source some Amoxicillin at your local Tractor Supply that may be the best shot if she's in bad shape.
Sadly, some hens can have quite a bit going on before they ever show signs of sickness, they can hide it pretty well. They continue to decline even with supportive care.
