Chicken with squishy crop & gasping/silent crowing

Thanks for the link to that thread. I had read so many different things here and on other websites that I had lost track of that one!

The squishy crop appears to be cured, and the pasty butt is getting better. I treated her 4 days with monistat suppositories by mouth (1/3 of a suppository by mouth each day) and one day 1/3 of one up her vent. She's much more active now.

She is still gasping when she is very active, and her breathing sounds kind of raspy, so now it's on to treatment number 2 - fenbendazole (safeguard), and isolating her from the nest box.

I'm glad to hear that her crop is better. Is there anything in the environment (mold, dampness, extreme dust, cedar chips, herbs) that could be causing her gasping? Do you know if she had a Mareks vaccination? Mareks can cause gasping, but so can other things. Just note if there are any other respiratory symptoms (facial swelling, eye bubbles, eye/nasal drainage.) If so, I would start some Tylan-50. I hope she gets better.

Thanks for the tips. I don't see any of that right now. She is shaking her head periodically, as if something were causing it to itch (but she is not scratching it with her feet). The other 3 birds are all fine.

We've had excellent health in our flock's first year, but I can see that I may get to know the local Tractor Supply Company pretty well in the future!

A belated follow up to this dear bird. She persisted with this condition intermittently for about two years. We had a regular cycle where she'd start getting a pasty butt, I'd treat her with monistat, and all would be well again for a few months. Then one day I treated her and the next she was dead on the floor of the coop. She was a good bird. Decent layer and docile, but always ostracised a little by the rest of the flock. I did what I could for her, and then one day that wasn't enough.
