Chicken with Worms?

If you want to get the right meds for any kind of worm--listen to Dawg53--he knows what he is talking about. There is no need to use wazine since it only works on roundworms. Valbazen (albendazole) works on all chicken worms.

Ok I will try either valbazen or waxine. What do you mean by blockage and how can I stop that?

Well, piperazine, the ingredient in Wazine kills round and nodular worms by paralyzing them and they must be passed in the droppings. The label states it is not for use in egg producing chickens but as long as you follow the withdrawal recommendation on the label, you're birds and you be fine. If there are more than one type of worm infesting your birds, this can create blockage with Valbazen according to an avian vet and an old time poultry man I know . That's why I recommended this if you have not wormed before. Dawg is knowledgeable, so let's see what he thinks.

Dawg53 used to advise people to use Wazine first because people used to believe that if the chicks had a worm overload, that it would cause an intestinal blockage, but he changed his mind in his later posts. He said it is now not considered to be necessary. Wazine should get rid of most of the roundworms and is cheaper, but their are many different worms and it won't work on those others. I didn't mean to step on anyone's toes, but Dawg53 is one of the experts on BYC, especially on worms, lice, and mites.

Think about it. If there is a large roundworm infestation, and wazine paralyzes all those roundworms in the intestinal tract all at once, the dead worms can cause blockage. Also, all those worms breakdown with their excrement... causing toxicity as well. Valbazen on the otherhand, SLOWLY kills worms over several days....no chance whatsover of blockages or dead worm toxicity. The worms are either absorbed as protein or excreted.
That's why I stopped using wazine. Sometimes I also use safeguard as a second wormer 10 days after worming with valbazen. Since I worm frequently and know there arnt any worm infestations in my birds, I sometimes use safeguard first, and again 10 days later, or in rotation with valbazen.
If there's a case of lice/mites, I normally recommend sevin dust simply because it is very effective and persistant ...persistant meaning it lasts a long time, same for inside the coops. If mites are persistant...I recommend eprinex on the birds and Adams Dip sprayed in coops. Other folks have their ways of doing things, some are effective and some arnt. I believe in hitting problems hard and quick before they spread throughout a flock and culling is always on the table.

I cleaned out the coop and sprayed sevin on everything in their house and out down fresh bedding so hopefully that will kill all the others pests in the pen. I couldn't find valbazen so I got wazine and plan on putting it in their water in the morning. I have one question though, it says on the label to put 2 oz. in 1 gal. Of water per 100 birds. But I only have 2 chickens how should I do that? And I appreciate all of the help!

Dawg's post made sense if the Valbazen does it slower. Just dosing two chickens, you might as well use the Wazine since you have it according to directions (2 oz per gallon or .5 oz in a quart waterer). Now within the next 10 days get yourself some Valbazen or Wormazole. Valbazen is about $45 a bottle and may expire before you use it all with only two chickens. You can get yourself some Wormazole liquid shipped quick right there in Arkansas. Wood Enterprises has it .

Ok I plan on using the wazine in the morning. Are you sure that the 2 oz. for 1 gal won't kill my 2 hens? Also should I leave the wazine water in their coop all day. After they are wormed when should I wormthem again with wazine?
