You can get metronidazole or flagyl from a vet. You need five 250mg tablets of one or the other to dose your hen once a day for the 5 days of treatment. As far as the safeguard goes, most feed stores carry the Safeguard equine paste. To keep it very simple; give your hen a "pea" sized amount of the paste orally. You can put it on a small piece of bread and give it to her to eat. Keep her away from your other birds or they will try to steal it away from her and eat it. Repeat giving her another "pea" size dose in 10 days. Can you get metronidazole anywhere else other than in fish zole also what is the dosage for 1 hen of safegaurd for goats??
How come an avian vet prescribed 60mg Flagyl for a very small Bantam then a few years ago? A hen 4x larger than that particular 17 oz bantam should accurately receive one 250 mg tab. An old rancher I knew as a kid always had success with that dosage for his LF Rocks if Blackhead were to arise. From The AAAP Avian Disease Manual - 6th Edition
"TREATMENT
There is currently no approved medication for treatment of histomoniasis in food animals. Small groups of birds not being raised for consumption can be effectively treated individually with metronidazole at a dose of 30 mg/kg orally SID for 5 days. Antihelmentic treatment may help suppress the population of cecal worms."
