There are lots of choices for roosts.

Some people use a 2x4, with the 4" side face up...others use a 2x4 with the 2" side face.

Some people use broom sticks, tree limbs, or ladders.

Have your chickens had a roost before? If not, you may need to teach them to use it.

But only one chicken sleeps on it and the 2 sleep on the nest

I think you can leave the coop open to the run, as long as the chickens don't get wind on them at night. Don't forget the downspout, too!

The roost may not be quite wide enough for them. Remember, chickens have very big feet!

It's good that you're fixing up the coop and run for them. They will be very happy chickies when you're done!
