WARNING: For the safety of your eyes, please be aware that there are some serious anatomical errors and/or fails in the following post. The author has a serious case of Friday night laziness.
So, please don't even look at the anatomy of this poor, mangled horse. This is all about muscles!
Lesson 3 - Basic muscle structure
Sine muscles can really be a pain, we're going to start out with a lightly muscled fellow.
You may use either method you wish to start - the shapes or free-hand drawing. I used the shapes this time, but I usually prefer to free-hand it. This way, though, you get a refresher on erasing the lines and stuff.
Alright - I'll stop blabbing and get to it!
I will be using this stock today -
First, you can either free-hand it or use shapes to build up his anatomy. I used shapes, although they are
not my best work.
Step 1: Outline the horse.
So sorry if it's not clear.
Anyway, it's fine if it's not exact! Whenever you need shapes, there will need to be modifications made to make it look real once you erase. Speaking of that...
Step 2: Erase the lines.
Obviously, this horse looks slightly unnatural without any joints or anything showing. So, I looked at the picture to draw in the lines. Not muscle lines, but the basic outlines. You may need to redo the back so that the withers and hindquarters don't look to high or low. Same goes for the stomach and neck. Whatever looks natural to you!
Step 3: Draw in lines.
Next, we're going to draw in muscle lines. The ones on the lower portion of the legs - beneath the knees, so to speak - are kind of hard to see on this particular horse because of his coat's pattern. I had to pretty much guess for that part. For the rest of the body - Don't be afraid to exaggerate! When we get into shading, the oddness will go away and you'll be glad you made the muscle lines so prominent.
Step 4: Draw in muscle lines.
This is the part that I'm ashamed of. *Shakes head*
Anway... If you'd like, you can add some light shading to give your horse some "volume". Haha, that's a terrible use of that word. 0_0
Anway! You can add the mane, tail, eyes, and hooves at this point, or even make it into a finished picture!
See how far ahead the head is?
So sorry if that was confusing!
Feel free to ask any questions!
So, assignment 3:
- Draw a horse, free-hand or shape-ified, and follow the steps to your heart's content to add muscle lines. You may practice shading them.
- You can use the picture I did, or any other one. Just try to make sure it's at a nice angle!
Happy sketching!
