Chickens allowed in Saline MI

It doesn't matter if the towns are chicken friendly though.

State Law allows them under the right to farm act which are posted above. Those towns may know this and decided to "allow" them. That way, they don't have to deal with the folks later on who know about the MI RTFA.

The MI RTFA allows ALL of us here in MI to have chickens. It doesn't matter what your are zoned at, you are within your rights.

Just a note, not all chickens are protected under the Michigan right to farm act. You have to be involved in the "commercial production of farm products" MCL 286.472(b,c). No quantity requirement, Shelby v. Papesh is the best case on what commercial production means (http://mi.findacase.com/research/wfrmDocViewer.aspx/xq/fac./MI/2005/20050623_0001546.MI.htm/qx). But, if you are just raising eggs for your own use and are not selling anything you are NOT protected by MRTF.

Tecumseh's zoning states that chickens for hobby purposes including but not limited to personal consumption, 4-H, show (there were some others). Basically, I think that Tecumseh is OK with people having chickens so long as they don't have 50.

The village that serves as my mailing address used to have a hatchery in town. It was closed down in the 1960s. Now the village doesn't permit poultry or livestock but an acquaintance of mine, her husband is the village constable and he says he will not enforce it. He says people need to eat and if they feel the need to get a few laying hens, he understands. One woman already has some banties and RIRs. During Halloween, as my daughter and her friends were trick or treating, I saw something in a backyard that looked surprisingly like an A-frame chicken tractor. Nosy person that I am, I had to poke around the backyard (only a cornfield behind her house so there are no neighbors to annoy) and found a small coop with chickens in it. When I asked the owner "What kind of chickens do you have?" She looked stricken and didn't answer at first. I told her about ours and she relaxed and told me. I haven't told the village constable. Obviously, she keeps hers confined and no one has complained. Why rock the boat?
