There’s no barrier I can easily throw up that the chicken’s can’t fly over, but they seem to dislike flying into narrow areas. So I make the beds no wider than 4 feet.
They probably can't easily fly out. Bigger heavier birds can't take off and gain altitude at a steep angle (though they may be able to go completely vertical for a bit once they're aloft and at speed) and they might not be able to get high enough to clear the fence in the amount of space available. Evidently it's a leading cause of death among first-year Trumpeter swans, who need a lot of runway and clear low-altitude space and end up crashing into walls and fences around large lots.
Somebody ought to make a study of it, since mature swans don't do it and must be making better planning decisions about where they land.
