I'm recently retired and my husband thought I would enjoy raising chickens as a past-time.
So I went to work and found a coop that we liked and put it together.
After lots of reading I built a run and attached the coop to it.
May 13th we went and bought 6 chicks. That afternoon my daughter and grandsons showed up with 2 pullets and 2 keets. Now I have 10 birds in a coop built for 8.
One of the chicks I bought is a rooster.
I LOVE IT!

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow welcome to chicken math. I feel like coop building is a full time job. I'm working on two more as we speak and am at least a couple weeks late. :barnie

I wish I could free-range them but my Bonn-Bonn (dog) would go after them.
I'm pretty certain that the 2 guineas will end up leaving the coop and as big as they are getting Bonnie will chase them but they sure can fly
Oh yea we used to have a dog but not anymore.. but we don't have a very big property so ours probably won't be free ranging much either.. maybe just for a few hours a day.. can you keep the dog inside while you let the chickens out for a bit?

When it comes to chickens flopping their wings, my avatar cannot help herself. That said, I gave her a run outside the pasture, connected to the house. One day I'm out there, she's just lounging in the grass with a couple chickens and a turkey checking her out. My RP turkeys wold pursue her, peck at her fur, coo at her, she would just get up and move.:lau:lau:lau:lau

I bought a 3ft x 50ft fencing that I put up to let the birds have some freedom which is working good.
