I have a 300 gallon stock tank for my duck pond, inside the chicken run. Chickens perch on the rim and drink out of it all the time.
One day while I watched, my EE rooster balanced his way along the rim where it is directly against the run fence (tank is in the corner so two fence "walls" are against the tank sides), OVER-balanced and fell into the tank of water, which was full to the top.
He flapped like heck and flew-ran across the top of the water in the tank, about six feet, to get out. He'd fallen in far enough to wet his entire tail and lower body. That was one bedraggled rooster, preening himself in the run for a while.
Every day when I get home from work, I check the stock tank "pond" to see if I have any drowned chickens, but so far, so good.
(Gee, that sounded callous, but I meant it sorta as a mild joke.)
By the way, when the ducks are IN their pond, and a chicken perches to get a drink of water, Thelma will swim over to bill their feet. I don't know if it's to warn them "this is mine, get off" or just that ducks cannot resist billing anything, anywhere.
KIDDIE pools should be fine for chickens to escape. Chicks, not so.
