chickens and rain...

do chickens know enough to go inside the coop when it is raining???

mine are 6 weeks and i put them in before a huge storm and then i let them out. now more rain coming and they are still just pecking away in the rain.

it does not seem to bother them. a few are in the coop though!

Some go in the coop, under a tree or car, etc....yet others stand out in the rain

shortly after the first thunderclap...under or in will be realized. Rain is not much of a hindrance to anything around here but us humans.

My 4-week-olds will go in the coop if it starts raining too hard and/or thundering/lightning. Otherwise, they just stay in their run and keep scratching and pecking away

We've been getting t-storms most afternoons (very rare usually here in the high desert, strange year!) and my hens and 8 week olds just act like nothing is different. They have the choice of going into a covered run or back into the coop. But, no...they're out there in the rain getting soaked. I just try to make sure their bedding stays dry so they have a warm, dry place to roost for the night.

I wondered this too but quickly found out they like being out in the rain. My 6 week old banties were taking dirt....mud...baths in the rain today

My guys keep foraging in the rain, and can come into the coop at night quite wet and muddy. Apparently, "mad as a wet hen" isn't all that mad.

Snow, on the other hand, is IMMEDIATELY LETHAL ON CONTACT to chickens. Seriously. Just ask them.

Mine mostly stay out in the rain to get the worms that come out of the ground. Our coop is inside our barn and is up on stilts. There is straw under the coop. If it gets too bad, they'll run under the coop but rarely go inside during rain. They only go inside to sleep.
