Chickens and Swimming Pools?

Quote:
Although I must say, they don't seem to have any problem getting out if the water level is close to full/the top. But it's not always easy to keep those things full!

We had one of those little in ground black lined pond things that a previous poster described, that just looks like a black hole in the ground. It never worried me because the chickens never went near it. Then, I guess it was a year after having the chickens, I went out and found one of my hens in it. Luckily it had a ledge so she could stand up without drowning, but she was unable to get herself out of the water and was stuck there, wet to the bone. It took a full day inside under a heat lamp and bundled up under blankets with me before she started moving and eating again. It wasn't a cold day, but the water was cool enough to really do a number on her and she just wouldn't stop shivering. It was pretty scary, all the more so because I was so positive that the chickens would never wind up in the little pond. It's a horrible thing to be wrong about.
