Chickens and turkeys eating cow ??

I just turned on dirty jobs and they were skinng a cow for the hide and then the guy was like we need to cook it down .


The guy said its used to be put into chicken and turkey food ?

I just saw part of that show too, but I had to turn it off because dinner was ready and the magots were a bit to much to handle.

We just went thru a lengthy thread on chicken eating chicken. I gave up following it because it was just so many people's opinions and many seemed rather divorced from reality

The livestock feed industry is highly efficient. If it is cheap, digestible and available, all feed sources are utilized

.

As an organic vegetable gardener, I'd like to see the price of fertilizers come down (or at least, not go up any higher

). Many of these "feed ingredients" could and should be going to fertilizers which are artificially more expensive than livestock feed, often. But, that's just my opinion

.

We lease our pasture land to a neighboring farmer for his cows. He also has commercial chicken houses on his property. It's a common practice around here to take all the shavings and poo from the commercial houses and put into a silo until it gets "sweet"

and then put it out in feed hoops for the cattle.
When we clean out our own chicken coop and haul it off to another area on the farm to dispose of it, the cows go nuts for it like chickens go nuts for white bread. They'll follow the tractor anywhere to get a taste of it.
It's nasty, but it's reality.

Seems like we should put the Good Earth in the middle of this and grow healthy crops for feed and food. Part of that opinion thing . . .

My dog loves to go out and munch on chicken poo. Even when it's frozen solid!
The chickens aren't quite used to him yet. He tries to get too close and they think he's after them when really he just wants to "clean up" their area.
I think we have all just gotten really uptight about these time-tested old methods. Our modern crowded and disease promoting feedlots have changed our view.
In a naturally managed environment a lot of the problems we worry about from this kind of re-use isn't an issue.

my old dog loved following my girls around and eat their droppings
never did him or the chooks any harm ,he died last December age 14.I aiso remember seeing my chooks hunt down and kill a mouse, (they ate it and seemed to really enjoy it ).
