Chickens Arctic Conditions Prolonged Period

I wish I could continue to take part in this thread, but right now all my birds have perished in a fire.

I was looking forward to this coming week. They would have loved this break from cold weather.

Fire is a cruel master with no mercy or forgiveness. I was shocked to notice the lost of your barn on February 11, 2013. No person is immune to it no matter what precautions we put in place.

I could see how much thought, pride and work you put in your set up in the condition of your birds through the few pictures posted in this thread.

I am hoping you be able to take heart and start over once you deal with the enormous shock. I am sorry for you loss aoxa. The world is a better place with people like yourself who enjoy the simple pleasures one feels in the country life.

Oh, my gosh! Aoxa! I am so sorry to hear this, what on earth happened?

Thank you.

It is terrible. Not only did I lose the birds, but my Pyr Clementine was in there and two sheep. It's the biggest loss I have ever had.

I am so, so sorry. How terribly tragic.

I would not have thought that could be the cause of a fire.

Murphy's Law!

The humidity as of late must have caused that hay to get just enough moisture to spark the fire.
I also heard of wet hay spontaneously combustion. Without even an electrical source; Even saw dust for that matter. That is a hard way to learn a lesson.

The hay was left outside for us to pick it up at a friends. It had a bit of wet snow on it when we put it in the barn. I had no idea this was a risk..

Sorry for your loss, I lost 24 birmingham roller pigeons a few years ago to predators, it doesn't matter what takes them it's still a hardship. I doubt that the hay started the fire. When hay is put up wet it can cause spontaneous combustion as stated before not from being "near" an outlet.
