Chickens Arctic Conditions Prolonged Period

Sorry for your loss, I lost 24 birmingham roller pigeons a few years ago to predators, it doesn't matter what takes them it's still a hardship. I doubt that the hay started the fire. When hay is put up wet it can cause spontaneous combustion as stated before not from being "near" an outlet.
Actually you would be surprised.

Highly Flammable or Combustible Materials - If at all possible, hay, straw and other types of bedding should not be stored in the same building in which livestock is housed. Care should be taken that these materials are not stored with machinery or near any type of electrical or heat source. Highly flammable materials may include:
  • Hay and straw
  • Bedding material (especially sawdust and shredded newspaper)
  • Cobwebs, dust, and grain dust
  • Horse blankets
  • Paint
  • Fertilizer
  • Pesticides and herbicides

My father is high up in Aviva Insurance. He says hay causes fire very often.

I agree that hay under the right conditions will cause spontaneous combustion. I worked as an electrician for over 30 years and electrical fires were usually caused by improper installation. I don't believe that anything being near an electrical device that doesn't run or cause electricity to flow will make something ignite. If something is plugged into an outlet and for some reason it overheats a fire could start, but just the outlet itself with nothing plugged into it will not allow electricity to flow therefore no sparking, no fire.

So v
I wish I could continue to take part in this thread, but right now all my birds have perished in a fire.

I was looking forward to this coming week. They would have loved this break from cold weather.

So sorry, I lost my chickens/roo earlier this month to fire , worst thing ever!!! Also sorry for the loss of your other animals!!

Sorry, I guess I read your post wrong. My bad
I had plugs and extension cords all over the place. It's one of those things that you never think can happen to you.

I didn't know. Our hay bales were practically touching our power bar which was plugged into the outlet a couple of feet away and that is where they determined the point of origin.
