Tonight I found the chickens perching on the perch although there was no other place to sleep, they were shivering in the dark and rainy night, so I grabbed my flashlight and put them in the chicken coop, that coop was way to small for them, only the smallest chickens could fit in snuggly. But I couldn't just leave them in the dark, cold and alone! So I put them in. Had no other choice, I would let them out in the morning. Do you think it was the right thing to do?

Better to keep them out of the cold rain. I have birds that double up in nesting boxes, not at all roomy. Some I have to find in one of the few roosting trees at night to grab them and put them into the coop.

Sometimes cramped digs are better than the wide open . I'd be more worried about predators than rain. Chickens can survive cold rain, however the combs and wattles can get frostbitten in extreme cold.
