I went out and picked up a broody hen yesterday, she hatched out a turkey poult, and i wanted to see if anyone else had made an appearence.. well when i put her back down i had these teeny tiny little white bugs crawling on me.. I have noticed that egg production has dropped dramatically, but i handle my chickens daily, and she is the only one that had bugs on her.. Are these lice or mites???? My dh went and baught some PROLAP Insectrin Dust, will that be ok to use and will it harm the babies??????? PLEASE HELP! I have had chickens for about 7 years and never seen this before.. i want it to stop before they get to my other chickens, ducks, turkeys, etc.... thanks so much!!!!

I always dust my birds' nests--even the nests of the broodies. Just a couple of times a year. It has never seemed to have hurt the chicks.

Also, a couple of times a year, I dust their favorite dust bath spots, their perches, and their butts. I have never had any negative effects from this--only positive. No mites or lice.

This stuff that my dh baught says NO CONTACT with human skin, if so call poison contral, can irritate eye, DO NOT PUT IN WATER, will kill aquatic life, etc...I got mad at him for buying it cause it sounds like the plague.. he wasnt too happy.. it also says no more than 1 oz /bird..

permethrin is the active ingredient, i want to use it on her, for sure because she is the only one i have seen/felt them on.. I will use the ash mixture though with my other birds, i dont like ANY chemicals with my birds for thier safety and my familys....

Permethrin is fine for the birds, probably not as evil an insecticide as Sevin, which many here use for mites/lice. If DE and wood ash do it, more power to you.
