chickens as house pets? Opinions and views

Nasty? Common sense... nasty is having a chicken in the house.

Yes. Nasty. You just threw a "nasty" insult at me and a whole lot of other people on this thread::

Again... completely ridiculous. The people encouraging this must be disgusting human beings that are used to living in filth.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. NO ONE is entitled to shove it forcibly and yes, nastily, down other peoples' throats.

Who would be keen on keeping an uncontrollable sh** machine in the house? Sander and molting feathers?? Scratching the floor?? Making noise all day long? The thought is absolutely absurd... and this is a child we’re talking about. I have a 14 year old who is also very smart but there is no way I would let her have a chicken as a house pet and these people are being irresponsible by encouraging it. My kid would have to be home 24/7 to take care of it. It’s ridiculous and people need to grow up and stop being idealistic just for the sake of it.
Ok I’m done now lol.

That's never stopped people keeping parrots as pets. They are a lot more destructive and messy than one bantam chicken (especially one as small as an OEGB). Those hook beaked parrots do some serious damage to anything they can get them around meaning you can't take your eyes off them for a second. And the big ones take great delight in screaming loudly at certain times of day or due to certain stimuli (our rescue Sulfur Crested Cockatoo did not like seagulls). Some species do projectile, liquid poop that generally doesn't land inside their cage. All part of living with a parrot but certainly not for everyone.

It's the same as the fact that some people aren't up to the challenge of raising and keeping a dog. Puppies are horrible compared to indoor bantams. And the amount of hair our dog generates drives me nuts but she's part of the family so we deal with it. She's a fabulous pet other than that one, small inconvenience.

Our 3 cats are strictly indoor cats seeing as one is deaf and half blind. Should I let her out into a world full of cars, straying dogs, parasites, diseases and other cats who would fight with her (and probably lose - she's feisty that one)? I prefer to put up with litter boxes and have wonderful companion animals who bring the whole family a lot of joy and who will die of old age, not from being hit by a car, or in the jaws of someone's straying dog.

To each their own.

Correct. I do not believe it still. Anything is possible - a giant reptilian sea monster could rise and kill us all tomorrow - doesn’t mean it’s realistic. It’s not. And neither is potty training a chicken. And yes I don’t believe that they trained the chicken not to poo in the bath. That’s just silly.

Training them not to poo in certain situations for a short period of time, Is not potty training. And Infact it is realistic, Many people have done it and it’s not that rare. How can you not believe that? It’s one of the simplest things to believe.

This thread has devolved from a fine, well-intentioned, chicken-loving young lady asking for help to a free-for-all that rivals a modern-day political debate. Can we move the actual debate on whether anyone should have a house chicken elsewhere and let the poor kid get back to enjoying her babies ... without the mud-slinging?
@TwoCrows?

Yes this ^^^^^

I’ve had and LOVED having a house chicken, her name was Rose. Rose wore a chicken diaper, mostly. It IS possible to have a house chicken. OP I’m so sorry you’ve been hearing the negatives... House chooks are so fun & enjoyable! Rose actually comes to her name and is a perfect girl. So YES it is absolutely possible to have a house chicken!! :)

I don't like to leave messages in threads that needed moderation because notes have a way of clearing the room so to speak. :D

But I do hope you all can talk civil here on this subject. What works for one, may not work for the other. So there is no sense in throwing stones. Leave your take on this subject in a polite way and leave it at that. Don't try to prove your point so everyone sees it your way.

I hope the OP was not run off and can make the best decision for their situation because they received great information here. BYC has wonderfully gifted members with great knowledge and compassion. Lets show them our stuff here!

Dear OP, I am sooo sorry about some of the rude comments people are making.... Please know that’s not what BYC is like, some people have very strong opinions and have trouble holding it back. I hope some of the comments haven’t run you off. I wish you the absolute BEST of luck, you do what you’d like! There are pros and cons to keeping house chickens. :hugs :hugs
