chickens as pest control

My chickens killed a 3-foot, or so, snake a couple of weeks ago. In front of me! I was standing there peacefully, changing water in their waterers, and all of a sudden I see the whole flock gang up on something, and whoa! They threw the snake in the air, then pecked on it, then threw it again, and before you know each hen dispersed in every direction carrying a three-inch piece of the snake. Oh, was that gross!

As far as the gardens go - NO. They will tear your most prescious plants with no regard. Only after harvesting, I imagine, but not while plants are growing/fruiting.

We had a lot of ticks before we got chickens and now I hardly ever find a tick on us, the dog or cat, and never on the chickens, so they must be doing something.
