chickens badly mauled

You'll have to bury your dear one about 4-6 feet deep so your predator, if it is in a canine, won't dig it back up. We have a fairly effective means of burying our little ones when they pass. I dig a hole deep enough to lay him/her to rest with a new fruit tree planted on top of them. I haven't had any "exhumations" but take note you can develop an orchard quite quickly in a hurry if you have a larger flock.

plums anyone?

Oh I am so sorry she didn't make it.. We have a cemetary for all of our animals, it just seems to bring closure. Hopefully since your other one is drinking she'll make it fine, just keep the wound dry and let the air get too it, I don't even know that I'd keep putting the neo on it since that will keep it wet. As long as it looks good and doesn't get weepy it should be okay..oh and I do dog woods and red buds over mine, now a flowering crab apple, will have to start on the orchard next... but hopefully it will be a long time..

What a wonderful idea to plant a tree with the dead hen - I have a potted persimmon sapling I've been meaning to plant, so it's perfect. She's in the freezer for now, but is destined to be reincarnated as persimmons soon.

As of this morning my remaining hen is still holding on. last night i reapplied bandages with neosporin after spraying her wounds lightly with a weak betadine solution. It still looked horrific - i couldn't imagine just leaving everything exposed yet. I was able to coax her to drink a few tablespoons of water and eat a few sunflower seeds (her favorite) although she insists on eating them with shells on. I put her in a small dog crate, but am a little worried her feet might be getting sore from standing on the flat surface all day - a couple times i saw her lift up a foot and curl it under her. wondering if i should try to rig up a perch for her in the crate - any thoughts?

How awful for you! I am so pleased that despite her injuries that one is surviving - I hope she continues to improve rapidly, I don't have much knowledge but have read what others have posted here and betadine is brilliant for wounds - if you have any wound powder it is great for putting on wounds and letting the air get to them - it may sound crazy but it is extremely effective and by covering the wound it keeps it wet.

I am so sorry that you are going through all of this - you are in good hands though.... BYC members are incredibly informative and they will help you through this ( as will they for your chicken )

We use a post hole digger to bury our dead chickens. The hole is fairly big enough and you can control the depth a little better. When you hit tree roots you can chop those easily. We have a high water table and having a post hole digger has been a tremendous help in burying dead little critters. Love the tree ideas!
