I have a hen covered in maggots. They are everywhere on her butt. I’ve bathed her once in a tub full of fly spray and water. Then another time in water and vinegar. It seems like she has a ball of raw flesh coming out her behind. There are still a good bit of maggots on her butt. What do I do? She’s so out of it. Literally just collapsed and has her eyes closed. I feel like she’s coming close to death. I don’t know what to do, I don’t want to lose my baby. Please help!

Sorry about your hen. It sounds like she could possibly die from this. If you have Poultry NutriDrench give her 2 ml slowly by mouth. Otherwise give her sips of water. I would soak her in warm Epsom salts or soapy water. Try to get off as many maggots as possible. Plain Neosporin ointment can be applied to her butt to smother the maggots. Many hens can get over this if the maggot are not up and inside the body. Just give her suppsetive care, fluids, and offer some cooked egg or wet chickens feed to eat. More maggots can keep hatching for awhile, so repeat the baths tomorrow as she tolerates it, until the maggots are no longer seen. Use tweezers and a magnifying glass if needed.

I have the NutriDrench. We gave her some last night, but there were no maggots then. Thank you for your advice. I’ll try to give her some more.

She’s our only chicken. I’ve checked, and there are no vets that take chickens around my area.
Yeah, most people don't. Maybe try to remove them yourself, pull them out or use a chemical of some sort to take them out.

Treating maggot wounds
  1. Get yourself a vial of Ivermectin injection (available at vet shops). ...
  2. Discard the needle, use only the syringe to squirt the ivermectin carefully 'inside' the wound. ...
  3. After half hour use tweezers etc to take out the dead maggots.
  4. Flush wound with saline (RL) then with Povidone Iodine (betadine).
  5. Do not wash daily, the wound needs time to air (recover), every other day would be okay.
