Just noticed this morning my chickens comb is half way off, its not dangling, but separated from her head. There's some dried blood on her head but other than that she seems okay, doesn't seem in pain and acting normal. I've read I should cut it off, but I just can't bring myself to do it, neither can anyone in my home! I'm going to tractor supply to get an antibiotic ointment, so I can first wash it out and then apply the ointment to her wound. Is this enough?? I do not want it to get infected or snag again. I've read that if I cut it wrong she can possibly bleed out.

Can you post some pictures? Unless it's hanging in a way that interferes with her seeing or eating, it will probably be ok. I wouldn't cut it off unless it was doing that, they do tend to bleed a lot, but if the bleeding has stopped it will probably heal up fine. Pictures would help.

I wouldn't be able to cut it off either!

If I were in your shoes, I would first separate her from the flock. I would clean it really well with Vetericyn (or another antimicrobial). I would do this a number of times.

Once it looks pretty cleaned up, you could try to super glue it back together. That's what my mother-in-law and I have done after hawk attacks for wounds we need to seal, and it seems to work every time.

Just an idea! Hope she feels better soon!

Yes here are some pictures, it's not interfering with seeing or eating thank goodness!!

After seeing your pictures, I wouldn't super glue. It looks kind of okay to me. I'd just keep her separated til its nice and clean and scabbing, and I'd monitor her once you put her back with the flock to make sure she's not getting picked on. But that doesn't look bad, to me.

I agree. If you want to put a little plain antibiotic ointment on it, that's fine, just try not to start it bleeding again. I would just let it heal up, and it should be fine. I would guess it either got caught on some fencing from sticking her head through, or possible damage from a roo when he was trying to mount her.

Mine did that last year, stuck her fool head through the chicken wire to get a tasty bug, then ripped the back half of her comb off coming back in. I cleaned it up, she was fine. Don’t cut it off, it will heal as a “Comb-Over”.
