Woke up to my isa brown mouth breathing, I assumed it was something in her throat so I checked and didn’t see anything, she was very sluggish so i brought her inside and checked her crop and it feels like rocks possibly, I’ve tried massaging it and giving oil but it’s the next morning and no improvements and her crop feels the same. I can’t do crop surgery unfortunately, any recommendations

Welcome to BYC! :frow

If they eat anything like whole grains it may feel like small rocks in their crop. Also, chickens will eat small rocks to aid with their digestion, but they should not spend a long time in their crop.

Does her crop look abnormally enlarged? If you check her crop first thing in the morning and there is still a bunch of stuff in there you are dealing with impacted or slow crop. Have you read one of these crop issue articles? They both get more in depth.

I have seen those articles and it’s quite hard to tell her crop is not swollen but you can feel the hard grain, she just ran out to the coop and laid an egg, their was alittle blood and some liquid on the egg. She’s breathing very hard like her air way is blocked. But she was walking and her combs normal

Breathing heavy could definitely mean something is up, they shouldn't be doing that. Is it possible you could upload a video of her displaying her symptoms to youtube of or the like and then post a link here?

So it sounds like the crop didn't empty overnight?

I can’t upload a video but it sounds a lot like the chicken in this video around 2:00

@Eggcessive, @Wyorp Rock, I don't have enough experience with respiratory issues to advise here.

This persons hen is gasping when it breathes and has a crop that is not emptying overnight. I am guessing the two are related. Do you just treat gasping like a respiratory infection?

Thank you!
