Chickens don’t like Carhartt

This adds to my theory of why the wife (CraZY Chicken lady or alternately Mean Old chickie Mama) Has wy more trobles with them than I do. She wers a wide array of styles and colors around them especially bright colors and neon colors. I am pretty stuck in the mud with my dark earth tones. I also move more slowly they definitely like slow steady movement rather than fast and especially fast bursts of movement. They also know I am the bigger sucker for girls gathered around trustingly watching for me to provide scratch. I hate to go out there to many times a day because they don't need that much scratch.

Fall has arrived in our area, and I’m fairly intolerant, mainly of the wind. So, this afternoon I put on my big, bulky Carhartt jacket to go change the chicken water. At the time I didn’t understand what was going on, but they went bonkers, two of them even flying into the fence head first, the majority running away as fast as they could.

Later I stepped out on the porch without the coat and they seemed normal. I figure it had to be the coat. So, at scratch time (time to go back to the pen) I put on the coat again. I practically had to beg them to come get their ration of scratch.

Once they figured out I wasn’t a monster they trickled into the pen. Normally they’ll eat from my hand but most of them wouldn’t get near me.

I was fairly entertained by the whole deal (except the flying head first into the fence) and now understand why we call people “chicken” when they’re scared. :lau

It has nothing to do with Carhartt. Chickens don't like any sudden changes in their environment. They did not like it when I used a red handle rake and were acting really scared. They are creatures of habit and everything must stay the same or they get upset.

@Angelfishie you are wrong!!!:rant
Chickens love carhartt! Just look at the curtains (carhartt pants) for the nesting boxes which they go into without reservation to have a peaceful egg laying process. So I beg to differ with you about chickens not liking carhartt. :lau

Then you did not understand what I meant. These chickens like your Carhartt because it has been there all along. If you had bothered to understand my post I said, It has nothing to do with Carhartt. It is any sudden change in their environment. So it is you who is wrong!

@Thomas70 the post was directed at @Angelfishie not sure why you are directing something at me. To @Angelfishie just so my post doesn’t get taken the wrong way by you my post was all in good humor it was not to be taken seriously which is why I left the laughing guy at the end. I know it can be tough to tell if someone is being serious or not via text so I just wanted to point out is was all in good fun.

I missed seeing it was aimed at @Angelfishie so I apologize. At first glance it appeared your post was aimed at me because I was replying to @Angelfishie and your post was right after mine so I thought you were going at me. It seems we both were rightfully going after @Angelfishie. Common sense tells me the brand of clothing has absolutely nothing to do with spooking chickens. Common sense is like a flower but it does not grow in everyone's garden.

The oddest things make them freak out! Currently have two flexible Black drain pipes connected to the two downspouts near the far side of their run. I have to pull the green garden hose over it sometimes. They are familiar with the hose and that has never ever bothered them. But the sound of the hose as it moves over the black plastic cause the chickens to scramble and the rooster to sound multiple alarm calls!! Every single time!!
It must sound like some kind of predator!

Nothing seemed to both my flock- coat, hats, 4-wheeler, even my giant dog- they’re cool with everything... except when I need to use my cane. Absolute mayhem. Flying into fence, hiding under bushes, crowding around the dog. Screaming their heads off. I learn something every time I’m with them. Mostly I learn to expect the unexpected.
This reminds me of my Mom's years with hens - she always got the 25-pack from Sears Roebuck every two years and there was always a roo or two in there (we'd eat the extras) and all she had to do to keep the roo in line was to carry a child's hoe. Never had to use it, but they never went near her when she was carrying that, lol

Chickens can be so silly, haha. Mine have a variety of shovels and brooms in their enclosure they normally have no problem with, but if I pick one up suddenly it's the scariest thing in the world. They hate pretty much all tools, except for the watering can, since I use it to refill their water every day.
