Chickens eat mice?

My not quite 4 month old Barred Rock ate a tiny mouse yesterday. It shocked me! I didn't think they did that. The chickens were chasing her around trying to get it from her.

Funny isn't it...I found a nest of baby mice and my daughter was upset cause I threw them to the birds...lol

My chickens caught a mouse the other day and the three of them fought over it in a frenzy of Peking and thrashing it about in a plum of dust created by the commotion. The best thing I've ever witnessed! Poor mouse never stood a chance!

So I know mice potentially spread disease to chickens...so here's my question.. is it through their pee and poop that they spread disease? Just caught a chicken eating a mouse! EWWWWW Should I be worried about disease??

I have one Rhode Island Red that particularly loves to eat the mice our cats get but don't eat. She is healthy and has eaten several mice over the past several months. I wouldn't worry to much about it.

Chickens will eat whatever they can - rodents, amphibians, bugs, carrion, whatever. Doesn't matter to them.

My runner ducks are way worse on the local indigenous fauna than my chickens are - they love their frogs, toads, and mice.
