I am in Australia and I have 2 Australorps in a suburban backyard. Beautiful big, healthy black hens. Generally I get 10 eggs, each weighing between 60 and 70grams per week. But the chooks seem very happy to share their food with the native mice. I remove the food at night but the mice still come in to their run and 'share' the grain on the ground. The chickens are affectionate and feisty but not aggressive towards the mice at all. I might try the peppermint oil down the holes that the mice access. Any other organic deterrents found since this thread was developed?

I just watched my not quite 5 m.o. Barred Rock pullet catch and eat a mouse! I heard what I thought was the "egg song"(she has not yet laid) and went out to investigate. . . she had a nice sized mouse (thankfully deceased) in her beak and was running around shaking it, then, like a snake, she manouvered it into a "head first" position, and "down the hatch it went. Please enlighten me. . . is this common, or a real fluke? Thanks, Carol
mine have now eaten 3 mice. Do the chickens get worms or disease from eating rodents?
