chickens eat slugs?!?!?!?

I thought I was the only one with toad houses!

We have a little ceramic one that we've had for years. I don't even know if they use it

But it does house some tasty spiders for them lol

Mine are not eating slugs. We have had such wet weather here that there are slugs in there run when I let them out in the AM. Maybe we have had so many that hey are sick of them?

Re: Toads

I haven't let my girls out of their run yet, they're a little too small yet but I do have plans to have them roam the yard for bugs, etc.

I also have toads who do a decent job of slug reduction and I'm sorry to hear that the chickens will eat the toads. But isn't this harmful to the chickens because of the toad's poison? Also, my toads tend to be rather large, about a pound each. Are they still in danger?

Thanks,
Mary

It depends on the type of toad.
Where I live, they are just plain toads that are a welcome presence in any garden. I'm not familiar with any others.
Try a internet search of the toads in your area.

I live in Florida where the humid weather is perfect for slugs...fortunately my two girls love slugs and when one finds a slug there is a comic cartoon-style chase in circles around the yard, with the one holding the slug frantically trying to run and eat the slug before the purser catches up. Then they spend a long time wiping the "slug glue" off their beaks!

I don't know if mine eat slugs, I have seen one of them eat a small (maybe 1/2-1 ft long) snake before. It was funny she ran all the way to the front yard and beat it against the ground and then would eat a little bit look over her shoulder, beat it a little more, eat some more, look over her shoulder. lol Too funny.
