Chickens eating me

I saw the thread title and thought goodness, do they have a psycho broody hen too? Mine tries daily to take bites out of me.

Back to the correct topic of the thread though, I had a few mousers in the flocks over the years and saw them kill and eat small snakes, frogs, slugs, snails, a small bird or too...

Just yesterday afternoon when I let the girls out to forage, one of them immediately found a dead mouse and started running around the yard with it hanging out of her mouth and letting everyone know she found something!

I was bit freaked because my first thought was, did this mouse die because it was poisoned? I tried to take it from her to no avail and the others started chasing her too wanting a piece of it. I got a good enough look at it initially to see it had already been half eaten by whatever killed it so I just let them have at it. They eventually ripped it in half but after running around with the mouse parts, they eventually just dropped them and I never did see them actually eat it. They sure were excited about it though!

I caught my chickens eating mice. Is this normal, or even safe? I've neve heard of this.

Eating mice is totally normal! Mine eat frogs all the time.

For the purpose of mouse duty, I ordered 6 Buck Eyes this spring. I'm anxious to see if they live up to their reputation of being excellent mousers.

Ha ... well the title had me going ... I have a hen who eats anyone who walks through the pen without feeding her anywhere near feeding time!

That is, she eats their shoes ... sort of walking backward in front of you jumping from one foot to the other 'eating' them as you try to walk. She doesn't have to be hungry either. There can be feed left. She just knows the time.
