  • Any suggestions on new out break of fighting. My previous tribe was incident free for almost 4 years, we gave them all new homes before this batch so no integration issues. They started laying about a month ago and just last week had to bring 2 in for separation. Got there wounds healed, tried to re introduce and same birds getting attacked. Gave them all bands but I can not catch the perp or perps. When I stand there to observe every one on best behavior.

How are you integrating them? It’s best to put the new ones within eyesight of the rest but not be able to get to them. That way they get used to them. Then let them cohabitate and such. Throwing chickens that do not know each other is a recipe for fights I think.

I let them out together in the yard for a few hours, they put them selves back in the coup together, with supervision. checked on them and they all made it onto their roosts. they were doing ok this morning, but later noticed one with pecked legs again. I just let them into yard again to try to observe the aggesser. They have been together from day one as chicks.

Hi,
tell us how many chickens you have and if there are multiple roosters.
roosters will fight amongst themselves, and sometime injure hens in there zest for breeding.
older birds will usually pick on the younger birds until the new pecking order is established, but usually no real harm or injuries result from this....again unless there are multiple roosters.
the fact that they have been together since chickdom means nothing to adult birds and cockerels.

On my opinion, put a rooster with them. Within city limits, separate the dominant one. I always have problems when one is dominant, but putting a rooster with them helps a lot.
Im not against roosters, but I did so well with my first tribe, I followed what I did last time. Not sure if I have space to add another. I ordered 6 Buff orphinton hens and ended up with 7. Guess 7 is my unlucky number. did fine with my first 6 girls.
