Seems as if a few people online don't even read what they respond to Pop. I'm still learning too...wish I could be an expert like most of the folks here.

FYI cuz I know you care.....a Shamo was reserve of show out here in CA this last weekend in a 2400+ bird show. The AOSB class had 154 birds. It was a beauty! Raised and shown by the Dragon Lady.....Suzann Chung.

Walt

Funny one Walt! Impressive showing by Suzann. I`m in FL now, picking up a trio of O Shamo from my friend, Jay Blue (George McCallister). My area of interrest is pit birds and not show birds. I find it very interresting to note that one of the hens in my trio is missing her tail. All of it. According to George, her tail was bit off by a bear, LOL. Can ya just see that???.........Pop

No matter what I know and how much I have learned all these years, there is always some new to learn when it comes to poultry and goats. I never turn my back on someone helping out or giving advice. Even if there advice is not good, it may spark something else in your mind that leads to something good. I am always ready for a post like this.

46 years raising poultry 73 yo. Not counting a couple years on a commercial chicken farm.

Walt

54 years with fowl. I'll be 65 in March. It's in my sig, but it seems not many folks read sigs..........Pop

Haha! I found someone even older than Walt on this forum!

I think a couple of his threads are gonna be very popular, too!
This one and this one.

I've already mentioned my experience with chicknes in two different posts in this thread. My age is not anyone else's business. I choose to not clutter up my profile with things I don't want in there. Besides number of posts, age, or even time keeping chickens means very little. We keep chickens in such a wide variety of circumstances that a lot of what works for me or someone else is totally useless ot many of us. It is up to us to determine what might work in our specific situation.

People can request all they want, but I'll choose what I comply with. Beekissed owns this thread. If I'm told by Beekissed to stop posting because I decide not to put certain stuff in my profile, I will end my subscription. It's real simple.

I got my first batch of "fatties" which is what we call meat birds when I was 4 according to my mother. It would have been Apr 1st 1968. I turned 5 that June and was already on my second batch of chicks and leaning towards my third. We raised White Rocks back then. I have seven brothers and sisters, so my parents each had us raising our own chicks and working in the gardens to help out. Times were tough and we kids needed to help. After raising meat birds over the spring summer fall seasons for a few years I progressed to helping a lady with her egg layers too. I learnt much from her. Fast forward to 2001. My son is graduating from high school and going into the army. I sold my flock and was planning to move back near my family. This was the first time I had been with out chickens in all those years. Then I met my soon to be husband. I was injured in 2003 and unable to do much. Then I had my second son. Dec of 2005 my two year old son wanted chickens, so we got some. Since then I have never been without again. So knocking off the first few years of learning and the years I've been without. I would say I have at least 35 or so years of real experience. Much of my learning came from Old Timers. Heck I still have one of my grandfathers original wooden incubators, but it's just for show now. I used it for many a hatch and even hatched out some parrot eggs in it.

Now my 8 year old has 6 years of experience so far. I help with the watering this time of year, but over the summer most of what I do is check flock health and watch the entertainment. Oh and drive his eggs to the CSA he provides for.

edited as I realized my typo put my son still in high school during 9/11 when in reality he was already training for Iraq.

WOW! I'm simply amazed at the fella that is 97 years old...his posting is excellent! Sure hope he finds this thread.

Bee ain't gonna kick anyone off the thread because I have very little power to do so...none, in reality. Actually, I'll probably get kicked off the whole forum before long as I've had some recent bannings and I'm sure the next one will be quite lengthy.

I really don't care how many years someone has in chickens but I do care about snot-nosed kids telling the proverbial OTs of the chicken world just how it's all supposed to be done. When someone who has owned chickens for 6 mo. begins to lecture an OT it makes my hair stand on end.

I know, I know...we can learn from anybody and everybody. And we can do that on other threads...this one was supposed to be for picking the OTs brains, a place for them to use plain language that they don't have to sugar-coat and insert smiley emoticons for.

This thread is the castor oil of BYC...it may not taste good goin' down but it sure will do you good. Take it or leave it.
