I live in southwestern CT, and I am suburban, and our predators are hawks and the neighbors cats (for the cats we are planning to just put up a mesh fence that is about 6-7feet high. thank you for your help.

Dogs are much more of a problem with poultry, unless they are trained not to attack other animals. My 2 cats do not attack or bother any of my flocks, but will jump to the wooden posts that support our 6 foot fence and sit there every evening. The biggest problem we have had was when abandoned dogs were dropped off and killed 25 ducklings, but never ate any. Apparently they only knew how to kill from their owners. City people will drop off unwanted pets onto a country road thinking they can fend for themselves, but this only causes trouble for the country folks. We now have 2 mixed labs, trained to guard the flocks, so they are protected from killer abandoned dogs. Wild animals will take a bird once in a while, but domestic dogs will kill just for the sport!

I'm not getting the info I need in the other threads, I hope you can help me. What bedding is best for my unicorns, gossamer or corn silk? Also, I free-range my rainbows, but I can't get them to come back to the coop at night. It takes me hours each evening to round them up and herd them in, How do you train them to come home? Maybe I'm not feeding them right?

Mine put themselves to roost every night and all I do is close the barn doors about dark thirty. I have about 300, including chickens ducks, turkeys and geese. What you have to do is keep them closed up in the barn for a few days to teach where "home" is!
