no problem, you will be there for me sometime I'm sure!:D

Hubby has offered (on his own!) to hold her and let me flush with hydrogen peroxide with a syringe. I know there are mixed opinions on this ad I know the mechanism of its action and this is what I'm doing. I have got to at least try to flush them OUT OF THERE initially, then if that happens I can work on controlling them. So here goes.

Dilute the hydrogen peroxide!!!! That stuff destroys healthy cells and isn't supposed to be used with deep wounds. I would just get a tapered syringe and use warm water to flush it out.

I can't even tell what I'm looking at in that picture, even with the description :(. I would be afraid that the maggots are deeper than you think. Is she able to poop? Ugh poor girl.

Awww go hubby! Hang in there mama! You'll know more after a day at work, come home and she's up in spirits its safe to assume she'll pull through with minimum extra effort (few minutes of tending a day til she heals)

Or if you have to cull you gave her a hell of a chance!

Love the video :D

Just rinse her well after the HP spray and while not good for deep wounds will help neutralize the waste of the maggots. Thanks for sharing will all of us too.

Hokankai- yes, she is pooping. And don't worry, no need to dilute with these wounds, they NEED to be debrided as there is a thin layer of slime/necrosed tissue over top. I actually was able to do a fairly thorough job with hubby's help!

I put the HP in an asepto syringe thy I just happened to score at work the other day (and almost turned down.. Oh, the irony!).. I jetted it up under those maggots and they poured out. Then took the hose on jet setting (gently but firm, of course)and got a lot more out (also rinsig away the HP ;) ). By then the HP had loosened some of the top layer and I was able to yank some of it off, along with some straggler feathers in my way/in the wounds. She fought pretty good twice so we let her rest but over all she did fantastic!

After all the irrigating, I was able to get my (gloved, of course) fingers all up in the wounds and slathered them in ointment while picking straggler mags. Two of them have very intact edges and two others have very slight tunneling to one side, but loose tunneling and only a fingertip depth, running parallel with the skin, not deep INTO it, so there was nothing I didn't reach and there is nothing more than I'd say 1/4in deep. :D

After about thirty minutes I went out and more maggots were running for their lives so I dug around a bit more with some sterile qTips and was able to spread the ointment around again. She tolerated that great and enjoyed a scrambled egg while i worked.

Last time I checked no more mags coming out so I'm taking that as a good sign.

When I lift the flap above the vent, the vent itself looks great. No swelling, nice light pink color and moist.

:deep breath: I'm hoping this was the worst of the cleaning. I'm thinking I may do at least one more round with the HP maybe tomorrow evening to reach those shallow tunnels again.

Oh yeah.. Speaking of poo.. What about eggs??? That's my next concern. Will she be bound up if she doesn't lay? Or is there any way for her to avoid laying? This will be day 2 with no egg if it doesn't come. I did fix her a little hay nest in the kennel but not sure what she'll do.

Sounds like you (and hubby) are doing a GREAT job. She sounds like a fighter, and with that description of the wounds I'd expect her to heal up just fine! I would continue to flush the wounds twice a day, and keep her away from where flies can get her for a couple days like in a dog crate or something. Don't forget to let the wounds dry out well between cleanings too :)

Keep us updated! Is there a way to bandage the flap of skin to hold it in place so that it can heal?

Will do. These kinds of tunnels I would rather let heal from the inside out.. Don't want to close up any nasties in there. She's in a clean enough place (newspaper floor) to where I feel good with them open to air. You DO make me wonder if I could even bring home some iodoform gauze and *pack* the wounds though! That would be great once I know the mags are all gone.
