It’s been said that chickens and gardens can go together like peanut butter and jelly. We often hear how backyard flock raisers compost chicken waste for fertilizer, or that birds can be the best insect hunters around.

There are many garden plants that your chickens love and are safe for them to eat, including kale, carrots, oregano and basil.

On the flip side, keep your chickens separated from these in your garden as they are not safe for chickens to eat:
· Avocado skins and pits: toxin called persin
· Onions and garlic: can give eggs an off flavor
· White potato peels with green areas: toxin known as solanine, can be fatal to chickens
· Rhubarb: contains antraquinones, which can have a laxative effect; high concentration of oxalic acid can be poisonous

Do you maintain a garden alongside your backyard chickens? Tell us your favorite chicken-friendly plants, fruits and vegetables below!

"It's been said..." By people who don't care if all the work they've put into growing flowers, fruits and veggies is ruined by their flock of chickens.

I try and keep my hens out of the gardens...no matter what is planted. Their natural tendency to "sample" all plants, whimsical dust baths, and constant scratching will ruin any garden. My fruits and veggies are grown for MY benefit. The hens can have the leftovers...if any. They'll have free range of the garden beds during the non-growing season and can fertilize, dust bathe, and scratch all they want.
