chickens hatching duck eggs?

I have a friend with a farm and their chickens hatch duck eggs. It is very cute to see the chicken with all the baby chicks and ducklings.

I've used chickens to hatch call duck eggs. They never got off of them except I had one hen that after 3 or 4 hatched she got up off of the other 3 or 4 and they were pipping. Pekin eggs are a lot larger than call duck eggs so , just don't put too many under the hen.

One of my cochins hatched a duckling this yr... Poor thing about had a heartattack when her baby started swimming lol .... To this day the duckling sleeps with her hen mom she is now 5 mo old

Hi! I didn't mist my duck eggs.
Maybe our humidity is high enough here without it.

Thats probably why they hatched then. I didnt know to mist mine and only 1 hatched, with my help.

You also have to watch the individual hatching the eggs. Some will kill the babies when they hatch knowing they are of a diferent species. I know of several people who had to take the babies at hatch and brood them theirselves due to this.

i have a chicken who tried and tried to hatch an abandoned nest of goose eggs. lol. i think the eggs were as big as she was.

I use my Jap bantam to hatch everything--including duckies. I also have a game hen that will sit on anything, she hatched out 9 runners last year.
