Chickens have light sores on their beaks

Are there any sores visible inside the chickens mouth? Or is it only external?

only on the outside, they pop then reform
Its good they don't have the yellow sores inside their mouth :) That would have been not so good at all.
I'd still keep a very close watch on the inside of their throat and mouth, just in case.

It is also possible for chickens to get bacterial and/or fungal infections in their beaks. Once the beak develops a crack or hole the bacteria will flourish as your chicken re-wets its beak each time it drinks.
Taking a Viramin E capsule and applying the oil to the beak will help to protect the outer layer. Not knowing what type of bacteria/fungus might be present I would cover the upper beak with a bit of topical antibacterial. I use bacitracin ointment.

If you have any stagnant/standing water that isn't always clean you need to block it off or remove it. I have a large flower pot that was filled with algae, yard debris and dilluted manure in the saucer. I filled the saucer with wadded and rolled garden netting to keep them out of the drain pan.
A soft beak is a sign of Vitamin D or calcium deficiency if you notice that their beaks are softer than expected as a rule.

I forgot to say: In my ponderings on the benefit of mash fermented or wet feeds I ran across several articles on birds with beak problems. If you are feeding them wet feed I would also gradually switch them over to a dry ration.
