I have a pre-fab from tractor supply. Made it through a Maine winter with around 5 feet of snow on the ground. They only thing I did was cover the run with a clear tarp, shovel snow up to bank the run and keep it warmer, snow is a great insulator, and clear off the roof with each snow storm. I would do those things with a hand made coop. Just saying. Thanks for the warning about pre-made coops everyone!Uggghh!!! At our old house before we moved,we had like 20 pallets laying around and a big roll of chicken wire!!!
Why didn't we bring it with us???
Yes,I read that silkies are a little more high maintenance than other chickens, don't worry!

My dream is to have a hobby farm when I move out! For the farm I want 5 Nigerian Dwarf goats,2 horses,1 pony,1 miniature donkey,3 pigs,3 ducks,4 silkie chickens and 15 egg laying chickens! For in the house I want 2 Newfoundland dogs,2 boston terriers,2 ferrets,1 rabbit,3 rats,3 mice,1 hamster,1 parakeet,2 chinchillas,1 hedgehog,2 sugar gliders,1 blue tongued skink,3 leopard geckos,1 crested gecko,1 iguana,3 mourning geckos,a big fish tank and everything else! NOT all at once,or so right away tho!
Also... Would silkie chickens be happy in a neighborhood? My cousins and my best friends chickens are free range,in a coop at night, and my neighbors chickens had a HUGE fenced area... Is it mean to deprive chickens of free ranging or a huge fenced area? Our yard is literally 1\3 of an acre,so the chickens fenced area would be quite small.
What do I give a chicken to do? Besides perches, feeder, waterer, nesting boxes and obviously a coop and run. Do they like toys? Like little balls with bells in them???
But we have a ton of mice because of the fields behind and in front of our house,so I guess the chickens will have a lot of fun?
Might even help convince the parents!
