Hey BYC people! It's getting pretty wet where I live and a storm is supposed to start. That means, of course, lightning. Our coop is very small because my ladies are all free-ranged and that's just where they sleep. Should I shut them in, or are they small enough to be safe? Please let me know! Thank you in advance!

So long as the coop will not flood and is constructed well enough to withstand high winds, put your hens in the coop. If your coop is not a sturdy structure your flock may be better off taking care of themselves. Having said that, I have had a few stray chickens get blown in by particularly strong storms. Good luck, I hope all will be well.

Thank you! Storms here aren't very windy here but I'll take extra care :)

I have them secured in the run area, and then let them decide if they need to go into the coop from there. They usually don't go in. The door to their coop stays open year round, except on the coldest nights. Even then, I close it up at dark, and open it again before dawn. I failed to let them out early enough one day, and they panicked enough to injure one another. Never want to do that to them again.
