CHickens in buckets...who knew?

Thanks to your post, I think that my DH & I may actually do this for our nesting "buckets" instead of boxes. Making the boxes has proven to be a pain to get them in our old dog shep converted coop...

Buckets...cat litter boxes...now how's this for a hybrid:

The smaller (right) side of the lid is permanently attached and the other side opens/closes. Cutting off the part that opens and closes would make it so the hens could get in and out, but the permanently attached portion would keep them from kicking out their nesting material.

Also, with the buckets being square, the issue of rolling is solved.

The other day while I was in Sams, I purposely bought thier brand of laundry detergent because it's in a square bucket just so I could have the bucket for a nestbox when I'm done with the laundry soap!

Ok - got a question. I have several of the square cat litter buckets - they're old and U.G.L.Y. I was wondering if the 'new' spray paint that's supposed to bond with plastic would be safe to use on them. Since chickens peck at everything , I'd hate to go out of my way to make something pretty and wind up making them sick.

I would not have the 5th top one I would take that down if I were you because sometimes girls tend to fight to get the highest one, thats why pretty much all nesting boxes are all the same level.

Those look great! My first nest box was one of those square plastic buckets cat litter comes in--you can see it here:

The girls really loved it!

Now they use a cat litter box (I'm sensing a theme, LOL!):
