I'm a novice with chickens but my friend has lots of chicken experience (the chickens live at the friend's house). We have a few different kinds (18 young ones, 5 adults) but, at the moment, my concern is over the white crested black Polish babies. It's a little too soon to tell but all 3 may be roosters. We have an adult rooster and while my friend thinks maybe we could have 1 additional rooster with that many hens, we don't need 3. If anybody is interested, please let me know. We're located in Hunterdon County, NJ. Looking forward to raising the chickens & getting some info from everybody here. I'll keep you posted on the gender issue!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You can post pics in the What Breed/Gender forum for help with figuring out what you have www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this
And you might want to post in your state thread for local homes for your potential cockerels https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/537/new-jersey and you can post ads after you have 20 posts in the BST forum's Sale or Animals In Need Of Free Re-Homing boards www.backyardchickens.com/f/67/buy-sell-trade
And don't forget to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping you'll find helpful https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Welcome to BYC!

Good luck the genders of you birds. I hope you can find the extra cockerels a good home and welcome to our flock!

Thanks so much---what a great idea about the local feed store ad! There's one right up the road.

They have to get a little older before we can determine their sex. I thought they were males b/c of the wattles being red but then I saw some beautiful pics on here of hens with small red wattles. The wattles are small and not growing (I have cockerels of different breeds whose wattles are growing way faster) so there's a chance that they may be hens. When they were smaller, their cohorts pulled the feathers off of their heads (I can only imagine that, to a leghorn, the Polish head feathers look like a threat display) so their head feathers aren't really full enough to see if they have male or female plumage yet, either. I've found SO much info on them, thanks for chiming in, everybody!

I got them from Rosedale in Pennington. They will take them back. Gonna see how they do for a little while. Hoping there are no turf wars.
