Chickens in Rwanda

Developing the yard with chicken wire roof. It was amazing daily watching big hawks in trees on either side looking down and studying as the chicken wire went up.

Chicken wire is hard to come by in Rwanda. I took 3 rolls of 2" hole (turkey wire) 3' x 150' over there bundled together as 1 piece of checked baggage.

They're likely black kites - no threat to chickens

A couple more upgrades added: previously the feeding troughs were on the ground and the top bar served as a favorite roost. They often got knocked over and litter ended up inside as well. Some PVC legs were added: 3/4" PVC was heated and shaped to form the brackets, then lengths of 1/2" PVC fitted to adjust the height (different sets of legs can be used to attain lower heights for younger birds). Also, lengths of rabbit wire were folded in a W shape and nailed to the top no-longer-a-roosting-bar. Yes, some of the chickens still tried to hop up on their familiar perch, but after an awkward 10 seconds or so they hopped down. Problem solved. Plus, official roosts are being built to keep them happy, complete with chicken wire to keep them out from under the roosting area.
