Chickens in the Rain

I live in the Seattle area. If we couldn't let the chickens into the rain then they'd spend the entire winter in the coop!

the standards don't mind the rain at all. It's our banty cochin with the short, short leggs who hates the rain. She sits there, looking miserable, and shooting us daggers as if it's our fault.

Glad I found this thread. I always wondered if it was okay for them to stay wet for any length of time. Mine also look like drowned rats. With the summer weather on its way, we should be getting a lot of rain, cuz its the rainy season here. Thanks for the information guys!

For adult chickens, I open the pop doors and let them come and go as they please on rainy days. Often they'll go out in a drizzle and munch grass or dig bugs. Certainly they'll get wet enough to have the drowned rat look. LOL

I keep chicks 4 weeks and under inside on rainy days. They aren't fully feathered and I don't want the risk of them getting wet & chilled.

I think if it is not completely freezing they will be fine. There top feathers repel water I think. Ours run out into the pouring rain, they hate being in the coop. I think they are smart enough to know if it is ok or not.

Mine are the same way--open the coop's pop door every morning, chickens decide whether or not they want to go out and/or run under the coop. The like light rain. They hate hard rain, high wind, or snow on the ground and stay in.
