Chickens in the road..

Can't argue with this, but I can agree with Erin too.

However the OP did say they live on a dirt road right? And they did say there are others with chickens right?

Seems to me if the note writer didn't sign it then it can't be all that important. Plus the OP can talk to the neighbors to see if they got a note too.

Seems to me too, that one of the benefits of living in the country, sticks , God's country, boonies, is being able to let your chickens out and run free without the expense of building a run or fencing in the lower forty.

Seems to me if the OP is willing to assume the risk then it's up to them and any night can be chicken dinner night if the traffic is right.

OP one solution might be to just fence the road side of your property. It may not stop all the girls from going into the road but it might help some. You know there have been articles about planting a hedge row to keep critters out and live stock in. Might be worth a look.

I wish everyone the best

question: at what number do you stop counting heads? Lord have mercy I can only count to forty. If I get more than that I'm in trouble. Not to mention I have alot of Dels and they all look alike to me. Except for Nick and the other roosters. I was just thinking why are only the males called roosters? The hens roost too.

My neighbor once got a nasty anonymous letter about their lawnmower beng louder than a normal lawnmower- oh and that it took him too long to mow their lawn. They went to every neighbor to confront the writer and to tey and work it out. All of us denied writing it. It made them so angry and paranoid. We felt awful for them. The writer of that note was a coward. I think the writer of your note was a coward, too. Anonymous notes are passive aggressive.

It's a dirt road and it sounds pretty rural to me. I'd ignore it. If you are ok with the occasional loss, then so be it.( We've just stopped full time free ranging because of predators.)

I once found an unwrapped mc Donald's hamburger in my mailbox. Totally random.

Sorry folks - but you should keep your chickens on your own property - if you need a high fence then put one up - if someone's dog was running all over the place you wouldn't like either - just because someone doesn't say anything doesn't mean they they like it

Agreed!!!

I'm sorry, bufforps, but you are in the wrong. Your right to do as you wish with your property ends at your property line.

That was a complaint from a neighbor, so you can not insist that the neighbors don't mind.

It is very traumatic to some people (probably most people) to hit and kill an animal. You have no right to put anyone through that.

A young and inexperienced driver might swerve off the road to avoid hitting your chicken and be injured or killed when they wreck their car. In most states, you could then be sued for causing the accident.

It takes very little fence to keep a chicken confined. Get yourself a roll of chicken wire and fence your property along the road to keep your birds out of the street.

Your livestock and pets should be confined to your own property.

Plus a car can easily slide and end up in a ditch if they swerve or hard break trying to avoid a chicken on a gravel road.

That's a good point.

I would agree to that! After all, thats what I would do! Mine aren't allowed to leave the yard, let alone be seen, so as not to "get caught". But when I do see some free ranging chickens, I slow down too, and enjoy seeing them!

One chicken hit on the road in 3 years equates to neglect? How many are lost to predation while free ranging. Sounds as if the OP lives on a rural dirt road in the country. Why must all actions/activities become citified?

What ever happened to driving at a reasonable rate of speed and having your car under control on a dirt road? I grew up on dirt roads, and anyone with an operable number of brain cells knew that speeding was ludicrous.

Thats what makes all people unique.. Everyone is different.. My two cents is that you dont want other animals wandering in your yard aka neighbors dogs excetra..That there isnt a person here likes a stray animal wandering in your yard. So go for all livestock animals it is your responsibility to care for your animals and keep them confined to your property..just like any pet or animal.
