we don't have any snow yet, but last year, our chickens usually just stayed inside or they just went outside in the run (which had some ice on the ground in it) Our Rhode Island Red roosters (during their second winter with us, at 2 years old) would walk on top of the snow (it was deeper than our knees, but they just walked right on top of it!) last year. So sometimes they will be curious enough to walk in it outside, but the younger ones may take a little while to get used to it.
Oh and ours LOVE it when we hold chunks of hard snow and let them eat it. They like to eat the ice, too.
