chickens in the snow?

Mine refuse to walk on the snow. I have to go out and shovel an area for them.

There is a backup at the pophole door once they see it, and when it starts to melt and there are patches, they fly over them squawking.

They probably got their hatred of snow from me.

I sure HOPE they like the snow... I was hoping I would bond with one and teach it to ride my skiis! Also.. if they didn't poop so darn much I might take one to the wind tunnel and see how they fly when they don't have to work so hard!

I think that will be way too cold in the winter for your chickens. The Egglu, to me, seems more like a chicken tractor for summer time rather than a permanent residence. Could you build a small place for them in a shed or garage?

As to the OP's question, my chickens loved the snow. I'm from Michigan, so snow is inevitable. The rooster was confused at first and kept everyone indoors; after he discovered it was sort of interesting to eat, everyone came outside and checked it out. However, I kept the majority of it out of their run by covering the sides of the run with a tarp (like you said). This also helped to protect the birds from the harsh winter wind, which can be harsh on combs and wattles.

Mine wouldn't go out in the snow at all for weeks this winter, then started walking only in the really thin spots. This year I'm going to shovel a bit of their run out so it will melt quicker and they'll have a bit more space. the ducks and geese couldn't have cared less about the white stuff--they'd tramp anywhere in it.

Lol so funny to see them run across our concrete driveway when they see you w/ food and its iced over. They slip and slid especially the ducks.
